What is Overmolding?

Overmolding is an injection molding process where a composite product is manufactured with two or more materials. Industries use overmolding a lot. Everyday plastic product handles with rubber grip are a common example of overmolded parts. Such parts often have easy-to-spot lines separating the two materials.

How Does Overmolding Work?

Overmolding starts with a common plastic injection molding process where the molten plastic enters the mold and solidifies. The solidified plastic becomes a piece in itself. A second molten material subsequently enters into the mold over the first piece which becomes substrate for the other material.

When the material has solidified, the part becomes a composite part with two pieces made of two different materials. More layers and pieces are possible to create with the same process. Once the part is ready, it comes out of the mold and might go for surface finishing.

How Does Overmolding Work

Advantages of Overmolding

Overmolding has one primary advantage. One machine can generate multiple pieces of the part directly on each other. This reduces the number of machines and assembly line stations required which saves a large amount of time and money.

Overmolded parts have a broad range of applications due to their composite nature. Grips, seals, insulation, and vibration absorbing layers are often overmolded on products.
