What is CNC Turning?

CNC turning is a material removal process used for producing cylindrical parts out of bars of raw material which usually have round but can have hexagonal or square cross-sections too. CNC turning is employed for production of cylindrical and tubular parts like screws, bolts, and washers.

In CNC turning, a cylindrical bar of material is held in a chuck able to rotate at high speeds. A moving single-point cutting tool removes material on the bar’s outer surface or drills a hole in the inner region to produce the geometry as per design.

The rotating nature of raw material is why turning has the limitation of only producing cylindrical parts. It is also the reason CNC turning is often the most efficient and affordable way of producing certain cylindrical and tubular parts. CNC turning is known for its high-precision surface finishes and rapid production capabilities.

CNC turning is not only a surface machining process either as it includes processes like drilling, facing, boring, cutting, threading, and knurling as well. This gives CNC turning advantage of performing multiple operations without removing the workpiece which also improves accuracy.
